About

The people behind Cerenaut

A small independent lab. We supervise Masters and PhD projects with Monash and UNSW, work with advisors in mathematics, neuroscience and machine learning, and collaborate with researchers around the world. What each student works on, and what they built on, is on the research pages.

Leadership

Gideon Kowadlo

Co-founder and Principal Investigator

Gideon has spent 20+ years bringing emerging technologies to life in academia and industry, Australia and overseas, and in areas spanning Robotics, Human Motor Control, Mobile to Bio-inspired AI. He is a co-founder of Outware Mobile, Hoist AI, Atidia and Cerenaut. Outware Mobile began in 2009 and quickly became Australia’s leading app developer before becoming part of Arq Group a few years ago.

David Rawlinson

Co-founder and Principal Investigator

20+ years FT R&D in AI/ML - mostly applied (retail banking, scheduling/timetabling/vehicle routing, numberplate recognition, facial coding, eye tracking, medical imaging, bioinformatics & genomics), some academic (NICTA, Melb University). PhD robotics / vision based navigation @ Monash University. BSc Comp. Sci. & AI (COGS, Sussex University, UK). Certified Chainsaw Operator.

Bi-hemispheric continual RL

Kevin’s UNSW PhD takes the bi-hemispheric idea into continual RL for robot manipulation: how can an agent learn new tasks without forgetting earlier ones or breaking safety limits? Following the Novelty-Routine Hypothesis, a frozen generalist vision-language-action model plays the right hemisphere and handles unfamiliar tasks, while a growing library of small specialist skills plays the left and takes over as tasks become routine. A language-model planner and a safety module complete the design, which is evaluated on the LIBERO benchmarks.

world models and replay (ARROW)

Aziz led the extension of WMAR (World Model + Replay), starting from Luke Yang’s Honours project, with an international team of students across Europe and the Middle East. As a researcher at Cerenaut he authored ARROW (TMLR 2026): adding a distribution-matching replay buffer to a latent world model prevents catastrophic forgetting in continual RL, at far lower compute. He is now enrolled in a Monash PhD continuing on the same topic.

Collaborations

We work with researchers around the world who share our interests in a neuro-inspired machine-learning approach to artificial general intelligence.

Whole-brain Architecture Initiative, Japan

Cerenaut is working with the Whole Brain Architecture Initiative (Japan) on joint research and development through activities such as hackathons, research challenges and proposals, and leveraging our common approach to AGI. Check out our Request-for-Research series!

Luria Neuroscience Institute, New York, USA

We are collaborating with Elkhonon Goldberg of the Luria Neuroscience Institute, and he is now an Advisor to Cerenaut Research. Elkhonon provides invaluable neuroscience knowledge.
